Climate Change and Heritage
Management in Ghana
Climate Change and Heritage Management in Ghana
Climate change and heritage management in Ghana are closely connected, as rising temperatures, coastal erosion, and extreme weather events continue to threaten cultural heritage sites, women’s livelihoods, and youth opportunities. Across Ghana, climate change is accelerating the degradation of historic monuments and heritage landscapes, especially along the Keta–Ada coastline, where sea-level rise and flooding pose serious risks to long-standing cultural assets.
Heritage management in Ghana requires climate-responsive strategies to protect monuments, sacred sites, and community heritage. Effective conservation supports tourism and local economies while preserving national identity for future generations.Â
Women’s empowerment is significantly affected by climate change impacts in Ghana, particularly in rural and northern regions where agriculture is a primary source of income. Changing rainfall patterns, droughts, and soil degradation reduce productivity and deepen economic vulnerability. Supporting climate-resilient agriculture enables women to adapt, sustain their livelihoods, and contribute to food security and economic growth.
Youth empowerment plays a vital role in addressing climate change and heritage management challenges. Young people are leading innovation through green entrepreneurship, climate education, and digital solutions. Initiatives such as the Young Climate Innovators Programme (YCLIP) and the Centre for Climate and Sustainability Empowerment (CCSE) are equipping youth with practical skills to develop sustainable businesses and climate solutions.
Key focus areas for CWHF include climate-resilient agriculture for women and communities, green entrepreneurship for youth employment, and climate education integrated into schools and community programs. Climate change is a global threat to human well-being, and organizations worldwide, including the United Nations Climate Change initiative, continue to support adaptation and mitigation efforts that strengthen heritage management and social resilience in Ghana.
